From Awareness to Action: Recap of the 2025 HOPE Symposium on Gun Violence Prevention
On June 11, 2025, advocates, community leaders, and experts came together at Temple University’s Howard Gittis Student Center for Intercultural Family Services’ (IFS) HOPE Symposium on Gun Violence Prevention: From Awareness to Action, Shaping a Safer Tomorrow. This was more than just a conference—it was a call to action, bringing people from across Philadelphia together to address the challenge of gun violence and find real solutions.

Working Together for Change
The day started with a warm welcome from IFS leadership, setting the tone for teamwork and problem-solving. The morning panel, led by Stephanie Stahl from CBS3 Philadelphia, included: Dr. Amy Goldberg, Scott Charles, David W. Brown, Dr. Stephen Leff, Dr. Ruth Abaya, Malcolm Yates, and Oronde McClain. Each panelist shared insights from their work—covering trauma care, research, policy, and the personal experiences of survivors. Ebony Gordon, Director of Community Programs at IFS, spoke about the agency’s mission and the important work being done every day to support youth, families, and neighborhoods affected by violence.

A Conversation with City Leaders
The Fireside Chat, led by Rev. Cean James, featured two key city leaders: Larry Krasner (District Attorney of Philadelphia), and Kevin Bethel (Commissioner, Philadelphia Police Department).
Their honest conversation addressed public safety, community trust, and the city’s path forward.

Charting the Next Decade
The day wrapped up with a big-picture policy session, What is the Strategy for Philadelphia?, moderated by Javi Alvarado (President & CEO, Intercultural Family Services), with Rep. Darisha Parker, Rep. Amen Brown, and Adara L. Combs, Esq.
They discussed what Philadelphia needs to do in the next ten years to make a real, lasting difference.
A Lasting Impact—and a Promise to Continue
Survey feedback from attendees shows that the event made a real difference. Nearly all guests rated their experience as “Excellent” and called the content “Extremely Valuable.” Participants especially appreciated the panels, fireside chat, and breakout sessions, with many saying they felt more likely to collaborate with other organizations, reach out to IFS or its partners, support youth programs, and advocate for funding and new policies.
This clear impact confirms that the HOPE Symposium isn’t just a one-time event. IFS is committed to keeping this momentum going, continuing to work with our partners—who brought their expertise, lived experience, leadership, and voices—to drive meaningful change in our communities.
